My Skincare Journey
Since the onset of puberty, I’ve grappled with various skin problems such as acne, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, blackheads, and sporadic dermatitis. Over time, I’ve learned what works best for my skin through trial and error with hundreds of products. While I’m not a certified dermatologist or skincare expert, I’d love to share my experiences and the products that have significantly improved my skin’s appearance and, as a result, my self-confidence.
Face Cleansers
A good cleanser is crucial. During my younger years, I’d go for the most economical brand promising to banish all my blackheads with their miracle solution. In retrospect, these products often failed because they contained harsh chemicals that my skin type and sensitivity couldn’t handle. I now prefer a mild cleanser free of any harsh ingredients with names I can barely pronounce. After a skin consultation, I learned that I have combination and sensitive skin. So, I’ve found that a gentle daily cleanse with a chemical-free cleanser enriched with ceramides is the best approach to maintain my skin’s health and avoid more breakouts.
Makeup Removal
I used to think makeup remover wipes were the go-to solution for skin cleansing, as they seemed to be the popular choice among my peers. However, I soon noticed the irritation and dryness they caused on my skin. After some research, I switched to micellar water. It works great for me when combined with a soft cotton pad – my makeup just glides off effortlessly. While makeup wipes aren’t all bad, from my experience, they don’t cleanse as effectively as advertised. They’re my last resort, to be used in extreme situations like being stranded on a mountain with only makeup wipes in my bag. After using micellar water to remove makeup, I double cleanse with a gentle cleanser, especially on the days I wear makeup, which isn’t often.
Skin Toners
Toner has been a constant in my skincare routine since my teenage years, but I don’t use it daily. I feel that daily use can be a bit harsh on my skin. I tend to use it after wearing makeup or as part of my skincare regimen on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My preference is a mild toner containing beneficial ingredients like witch hazel or rosewater, both of which agree with my combination skin and improve its appearance. I’d recommend a toner, but not for everyday use.
Exfoliating Products
In my teenage years and into my 20s, I used exfoliating products excessively, often leaving my skin red and inflamed. With time, I’ve learned that while removing dead skin is crucial, it has to be done correctly. I now stray away from harsh exfoliants, opting instead for gentle ones with a peeling effect. Using such an exfoliant 2-3 times a week has proven to be ideal for my sensitive skin, leaving it feeling super smooth and radiant.
Serums
I’ve never been a big fan of serums. Most of them felt sticky or didn’t seem to be the right fit for me. However, I do appreciate a good vitamin C serum for that gorgeous glow, even though it’s not a must-have item in my skincare routine.
Moisturizers
As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand the critical role of moisturizing. I used to skip this step, thinking that my oily skin didn’t need more hydration. But I was wrong. Regardless of how oily your skin is, a good moisturizer is essential. If I were to indulge in one skincare product, it would definitely be a quality moisturizer. I’ve found that an oil-free moisturizer works best for me, leaving my face almost completely shine-free by day’s end. Moreover, I’m a huge fan of the ingredient Niacinamide. It has helped improve the appearance of post-acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and much more. I opt for an oil-free moisturizer containing Niacinamide. As for SPF, I prefer to apply it separately in a clear formula to avoid any white cast.
Spot Treatments
Occasional breakouts are inevitable, so I always keep a reliable spot treatment at hand. Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and sulfur have all proven effective in minimizing my breakouts. The concentration of these ingredients, ranging from 1-5%, can influence the speed at which your blemish heals. I usually apply spot treatment at night before bed.
